We were lucky enough to have our West Coast team at this year's SF Pride Festival with headlining act BoA. Thanks to Jenny (Lawlietta) for the awesome review of BoA's performance and Julia (bubydub) for some sick photos!
I spent most of my time at the SF Pride Fest in the barricaded crowd in front of the Main Stage. There had been tons of complaints about the hot weather and overcrowded atmosphere, and hanging out at the Main Stage only amplified our claustrophobia. However, like many of the other fans that were there for their favorite artists, we were willing to stand under the sweltering sun to wait for BoA's hyped up performance.
BoA was undeniably the biggest headliner of the day; she came after the Cliks & Solange Knowles, but the crowd was anticipating her long before she was even on the stage. There was definitely an excited hum throughout the crowd as the other acts were performing – the crowd, which had a surprising number of Asians, would often get worked into a chant for BoA. One fan even brought a live boa constrictor through the crowd; others showed their support through yellow balloons throughout the day. Even the MCs remarked how impressed they were by the number of BoA supporters.
At long last, Ferdinand & Greg from ENERGY 92.7 introduced BoA, and she emerged from the left side of the stage surrounded by a barricade of bodyguards, storming toward the crowd and opening her performance with 'Eat You Up'. At that moment, there was a surge in the crowd as people started pushing forward to get a better look at her, smashing us front row fans into the fence. She also gave a short message about how excited she was to be to perform in Frisco, then dove into 'I Did It For Love', which also drove the fans crazy. BoA concluded her performance with her live debut of 'Energetic'. I was really impressed by the choreography for this single, because there are so many levels and it really shows off her dance skill. BoA's energy really filled up the stage and made her performance so much bigger and better than just a catchy song with complex dance moves; her charisma really got the crowd going. When her all-too-short performance had ended, there was literally a massive wave as a significant number of people in the crowd began to migrate out; I was shocked by the sheer proportion of fans that had come just to see BoA live.
All in all, a great performance and impressive debut for BoA's third hit single. I'm excited to see her future performances; she mentioned seeing us all next year, so hopefully that's an indication of an expanding career in America!
